Local SEO: What Is It and Does Your Business Really Need It?

Local SEO helps your business be found when customers search for services near them.

Let's start without complicated marketing jargon. Imagine your car suddenly breaks down on a highway near your town, or you're craving a good coffee downtown. What do you do? Most likely, you grab your phone and type into Google "tow truck near me" or "best coffee shop near me."

In the search results, you'll probably pick one of the first three options that show up — along with a map, reviews, and business hours.

This is exactly the moment when local SEO comes into play.

What Exactly Is Local SEO?

Local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing your website and online business profile so that Google shows you to people searching for your services or products in a specific geographic location.

While traditional SEO fights for your article on "how to choose a mattress" to rank first nationwide or even globally, local SEO focuses on making your mattress store in a specific city appear first when someone there searches for "buy a mattress."

Why Is It So Important? (Some Facts Worth Considering)

  • Nearly half of all searches are local: Approximately 46% of all Google searches have local intent. People are looking for real places to visit or professionals to call to their homes.
  • The "near me" phenomenon: Over the past few years, searches with phrases like "near me" or "open now" have grown by several hundred percent. Consumers want a solution right now and right here.
  • High conversion rate: Someone searching for "dentist downtown" — rather than just reading about toothaches — is already ready to book an appointment. Research shows that a very high percentage of people who perform a local search on their smartphone visit the business that same day.

How Does Local SEO Work?

Google has become smart enough to understand where the searcher is located (thanks to GPS and IP addresses). For Google to "recommend" you to locals, three key pillars matter:

  1. Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business): This is the absolute foundation. It's a free profile that allows your business to appear on Google Maps and at the top of search results (in the so-called Local Pack — the three-pack that shows above regular results). You need to fill in everything: exact address, business hours, phone number, website link, and photos. Learn more about our local SEO services →
  2. Reviews: Google trusts what other people say. The more genuine, positive reviews on your Google profile, the higher Google will rank you. Plus, it builds trust with the customer too.
  3. Local keywords and website content: Your website content needs to clearly state where you are and what you do (e.g., "We offer accounting services in Chicago").

Who Absolutely Needs Local SEO?

Short answer: Any business where customers come to a physical location, or where you travel to customers within a specific region.

Here are the classic examples:

  • Restaurants, cafés, and bars: People regularly search for places to eat based on their current location.
  • Medical and beauty services: Dentists, hair salons, massage parlors, physiotherapists. People usually look for these services near their home or workplace.
  • Service providers and tradespeople: Plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, cleaning services. When someone has a problem at home, they search for someone who can come quickly.
  • Physical stores: From flower shops to hardware stores.
  • Lawyers, notaries, real estate agents.

Who Should Not Make It a Primary Focus?

If you're an e-commerce business selling digital products (like online courses) or shipping goods worldwide, and you don't have a physical store or office where you welcome customers, then local SEO won't be your priority. You'll need traditional or e-commerce SEO — check out our services here.

In Summary

Local SEO isn't magic, and it does require some work and patience — but it's one of the most logical and cost-effective ways to attract customers. If your business falls into any of the categories above but you're not on Google Maps or in local search results, you're literally handing your potential customers over to competitors just a street away.

Start with the simplest step — create or optimize your Google Business Profile. That alone will be a huge step forward!
