Start with the Basics: How to Create Your Business "Digital Business Card" on Google in 5 Minutes
Before we talk about complex marketing strategies, social media algorithms, and paid advertising, we need to get the fundamentals right. Namely — what happens when someone types your business name or the service you provide into Google?
If your business doesn't appear on the right side with a neat map, business hours, and phone number, you're literally handing your customers over to competitors right now.
This large, convenient information panel is called Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). It's completely free, and it's the absolute foundation of your local SEO.
Here's how to set it up step by step, starting today:
Step 1: Find or Create Your Profile
Go to google.com/business and click "Manage now". Enter your business name. If it's already there (Google sometimes creates them automatically from public data), you'll need to "claim" it — proving you're the owner. If not — create it from scratch.
Step 2: Fill in the "Big Three" (NAP)
In the SEO world, this is called NAP — Name, Address, Phone number.
- Name: Make sure your business name is exactly what customers know it as. (Don't add "Ltd" or "Inc" unless it's part of your brand).
- Address: Provide the exact address so Google Maps shows the right front door.
- Phone and website: Add your current phone number and website link.
Step 3: Add Accurate Business Hours
Nothing makes a customer angrier than arriving at a store that turns out to be closed, even though Google says "Open". Also add holiday hours!
Step 4: Add 3–5 High-Quality Photos
People are visual. Add a photo of the building facade (so it's easier to find), interior spaces, and a few shots of your products or team in action.
Your Task for Today
Don't put it off until tomorrow. Take 5 minutes today to log into your Google profile and check that the information is 100% accurate. It's the smallest, but most important step toward new customers!
